When the Dead were together they were keeping alive a folk/blues/bluegrass tradition that preceded them by decades. They did it by TRANSFORMING the music into something new. Keeping the spirit alive doesn't involve performing covers with the exact same antique gear they used and picking an era to recreate. It involves taking the songs and making them your own. People will be playing Dead and Dead-style music 500 years from now!
